Gian at Cupkake Royale

Anthony and I are enjoying our Sunday ritual. We just left the West Seattle’s Farmers Market and are now enjoying a delicious cupcake!

Yesterday was officially the last day of Spring Quarter for me at work. Our department had it’s graduation celebration before the HUGE, campus-wide ceremony. Summer is here!

The economics of Seattle’s Farmer’s Markets

Posted by Gian on 4th June 2007

Anthony and I go to the West Seattle Farmer’s Market every Sunday. It is surprisingly fun, even though we are generally just buying produce. I always assumed we were paying a little more than in the grocery store, but a story in today’s paper indicates that at least one of the markets are cheaper than the stores. Granted, the study was rather limited (only compared 2 stores that are known for being pricy against one Seattle farmers market).

I don’t know if the farmer’s markets are a better deal. Frankly, I don’t really care (which seems to be the sentiment of the people interviewed in this article). It is fun to talk with the farmers and buy produce that is generally much better than what the stores carry. In addition, what we buy tends to come from less than 100 miles away, versus thousands of miles for many of the big grocery stores.

Oh, how I miss the 30% off country

Posted by Gian on 2nd June 2007

When I was a student at WWU, we used to go to Vancouver, BC whenever we could. One, because it is an amazing city that I love to visit (and would love to move to…). Two, because every time we would go shopping there, it was as if everything were on sale. Back in school, the Canadian Loony was worth about 70 US cents. So, when the bank would reconcile our purchases, everything ended up being cheaper than in the US. Now, the Canadian Loony is almost equal to the US Dollar.

This country has really going down hill… politically and financially.

The Skin of Our Teeth

Posted by Gian on 1st June 2007

Last night, Anthony and I went to see The Skin of Our Teeth at the Intiman Theatre here in Seattle. It was a 3 act play. I must admit, I was rather confused for the first 2 acts. The first starts off in a house, during the Ice Age in New Jersey… the second is in Atlantic City during a major storm. Okay, now you understand why I was confused. The final act made me realize/think that the entire story was really a metaphor about human nature - that we are constantly struggling with internal selfishness (a “me” mentality) and the desire to act on behalf of the greater good.

Overall, I enjoyed the play. It is pretty amazing to think that a play written 60 years ago can have a story that is so relevant to issues we face today.
